You’re missing a tooth. Maybe it happened recently. Maybe it’s been years. Either way, you’ve got a gap in your smile, and you’re not quite sure what to do about it. First, take a breath. You have options. And here at Dice Dental in Bethlehem, we’re not going to pressure you into any of them. Our job is to explain the choices clearly, answer your questions honestly, and help you find the solution that fits your life and your budget.
So let’s break down your main options for replacing a missing tooth.
Option 1: Do Nothing
This is an option, but it’s not a good one.
When a tooth goes missing, the other teeth start shifting into that empty space. Your bite changes. You might start chewing differently. And the jawbone underneath the gap actually starts to shrink over time because it no longer has a tooth root stimulating it.
Leaving a gap might seem easier today, but it often leads to bigger, and more expensive, problems down the road.
Option 2: A Dental Bridge
A traditional bridge fills the gap by using the two teeth on either side as anchors. Those anchor teeth get shaved down and crowned, with the false tooth (or teeth) suspended in between.
The upsides: Bridges are usually cheaper upfront than implants. They don’t require surgery. And the whole process takes just a few weeks.
The downsides: Those healthy anchor teeth are permanently altered, shaved down forever. A bridge also doesn’t replace the tooth root, so the bone underneath continues to shrink over time. Bridges typically last 5 to 15 years before needing replacement.
Option 3: A Partial Denture
A partial denture is a removable appliance with a false tooth attached to a gum-colored base. It clips onto your nearby teeth.
The upsides: It’s the most affordable option upfront. No surgery. No altering healthy teeth.
The downsides: Partials can feel bulky and move around when you eat or speak. Many people find them annoying to clean and uncomfortable to wear. They don’t preserve jawbone either. And like bridges, they eventually need replacement.
Option 4: A Dental Implant
An implant replaces the whole tooth, root and all. A small titanium post is placed into your jawbone, which fuses with the bone over three to four months. Then we attach a custom crown on top.
The upsides: An implant looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. You clean it just like your other teeth. It preserves your jawbone and keeps nearby teeth from shifting. And with proper care, it can last a lifetime.
The downsides: Higher upfront cost than other options. The process takes several months from start to finish. And not everyone is a candidate; you need enough healthy jawbone to support the implant.
So Why Do Most Patients End Up Choosing an Implant?
Here’s what we hear again and again from patients in Bethlehem: they want something that feels permanent. They don’t want to worry about their tooth moving around. They don’t want to alter healthy teeth. And they don’t want to deal with replacement down the road.
An implant is the only option that stops bone loss. It’s the only one that feels completely natural. And while the upfront cost is higher, it’s often more affordable over a lifetime than replacing a bridge or partial every decade.
Not Sure Which Path Is Right for You?
That’s okay. You don’t need to decide today. What you need is a conversation with someone who will listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and give you a straight answer: no sales pitch, no pressure.
